I just got tired of one too many criticisms of Pure Land based on limited-Western understandings of Buddhism. My mother-in-law in Japan is a Pure Land Buddhist, Jodo Shinshu to be precise. She doesn't meditate (at her age it would be hard anyways), doesn't rationalize her beliefs. However, she's very sincere in her devotion, and studies Buddhist texts like the letters of Shinran and the Heart Sutra, which are both on her bookshelf. I admire her devotion over the years, and see myself becoming like her as a Buddhist someday if I can get out of the intellectual mindset long enough. :p Marcus, Stephen, thank you!
