Weird Buddhist Dream III
Posted: June 30, 2008 | Author: Doug | Filed under: Buddhism, Religion, Seattle | 3 Comments »This one is somewhat different than the two dreams I had in the past.
In this dream, I was in the lobby of a big office building, and I was there with a few female co-workers I vaguely know, and one had just found out she was pregnant. We had a big case of Dr. Pepper on the table to celebrate (Diet Dr. Pepper too). I was trying to give the woman advice from my wife’s pregnancy, but they didn’t seem very interested, so I left and was going to go outside when I saw a Buddhist monk walking toward from another hallway.
The monk wore saffron-colored robes and sneakers. His head hadn’t been shaved in a little while and had stubbles. The man himself looked like he was in his 50′s or so and had a grin on his face. He walked somewhat quickly toward the door, but as he was passing me, I put my hands in gassho and bowed real quick (so as not to draw too much attention), and kept walking past.
Then for some reason I stepped into an elevator nearby and the pushed the button to go up. I then realized that the elevator for some odd reason only goes to the 163rd floor, which for some reason I knew was a very high floor in this building.* I was kind of surprised, but I just stood there and let the elevator take me up. It was then that I woke up.
As stated elsewhere, these dreams are probably just my own mind, but it’s interesting to imagine what it could mean.

* – Recently I visited the Observation Deck of the Bank of America Tower here in Seattle, and that only has 80 floors or so, so this is definitely not any building I’ve ever visited. I am pretty sure no building actually has 163 floors, based on a cursory Google check.

Not all dreams are self mind made… I think that one should carefully investigate his dreams, especially if he is practicing a spiritual path in which devotion and reliance on a Buddha or Bodhisattva has an important role. Zen Buddhists may consider their dreams or signs they receive as illusions because their practice is different, so as it is said, “the effect doesn’t coincide with the cause”. But Pure Land practitioners (and maybe also esoteric practitioner ) can receive signs, in their dreams or while awake, that are real and can be helpful on their path. When you rely on emptiness in your practice, dreams or signs can be illusions and obstacles, but when you rely on the pwoer of Buddhas and Bodhisatvas, you may receive real signs as a support in your practice. So, investigate yourself and be happy that you have dreams in which monks or other Dharma signs appear.
Different Dharma gates have different manifestations..
Different Dharma gates and different manifestations.
sorry for repeating the last sentence. I didn’t see, I am too tired:)
No worries. Thanks for the input.
