Baby Learns to Count

I am happy to report that my daughter, “Baby”, has learned how to count!

One night, while playing in the bathtub she started mumbling and counting with her fingers. She didn’t know the words, but just knew the motions (probably from watching Mommy somehow), so I taught her to count to three. She can’t pronounce the words easily, so it sounds like “Wan, choo, chee” instead of one, two, three. She’s very proud of herself for doing that though, and likes it when I prompt her to count. Over and over. :p

Lately, she also likes to call Daddy on the phone while at work. A typical conversation will look like so:

Me: Hi sweety!

Baby: Jibba-jabba jibba-jabba BAH! Jibba-jabba jibba-jabba BAH! Jibba-jabba poo-poo.
(she’s trying to explain some story and likes to be dramatic)

Me: Are you being good for Mommy?

Baby: Jibba-jabba jibba-jabba jibba-jabba.

Me: Well be a good girl, ok?

Baby: Jibba-jabba jibba-jabba bye bye.
(suddenly she hands the phone to mommy)

Too much fun. :D

I’m proud of your little girl too. Wan, choo, chee”- I can just hear that in my head. How sweet!!

    Hi Gerald,

I love these posts of yours about your wonderful child.

As you know, my son is about the same age (his second birthday was last month) but he lives with his mother and I haven’t seen him growing up, so reading about your daughter and her development has really meant a lot to me. Thank you so much.

May you and your family be always safe, happy and free.

    Marcus

It’s lovely to be able to share notes. Maia loves talking on the phone, but she limits herself to “Hi mama. I love you. Goodbye mama.” She babbles at other times but not on the phone. We haven’t tried counting with her but she loves trying to recite the alphabet song. Isn’t it AMAZING seeing a child developing new skills?

Hey! I’m just learning how to count, too. :) The book I’m using talks about how most children love numbers, but lose faith somewhere between arithmetic and algebra. I hope that doesn’t happen for Baby! Numbers are wonderful!

Jeannie: Thanks very much. It’s very cute. I wish I could post a video, but we’re a little shy about showing Baby on the Internet. :)

Marcus: Yeah, I’ve been watching your posts about your own son. I hope your trip back to the UK works out well. It’s hard not being around your little one. Even a day is rough, let alone a long time.

Bodhipaksa: I do enjoy sharing notes, so thanks for chiming in. What’s amazing is that on any given week, children will laern something new. Mostly it’s things we take for granted as adults, but it’s interesting to see the development. You’re quite right.

Warrior Two: If she’s left-brained like me, she’ll be in calculus before long. Sadly, in my case, I bombed in college (too much goofing around), and gave up. If she’s like her mother, she’ll be very right-brained. My wife is very humble, but I’ve seen her do great Japanese calligraphy paintings. Baby could go either way.
