But also, I’ve noticed Chinese Americans, when asked, just call it “buddha”. It’s just too hard to explain all the stuff above. I don’t think I could do it in Mandarin, even if I spoke it well.

Anyways, thanks for the kind words. There’s too much misinformation floating around in the West about Buddhism, so hopefully this helps.

They must have been really popular in the 50′s and 60′s (Asian kitsch, perhaps?) because I remember them being in a lot of typical American households when I was kid. I never really knew the significance of Hotei. He used to freak me out, a little.
