Shift-JIS seems kind of dated now, since UTF8 is pretty well-developed these days. Some sites just might be dated and haven't bothered to update their default encoding or something. Easier to go with the description of the radicals so I used a really good online etymological dictionary. It contains three classic stories in both English and Japanese. Notes on the bottom of each page give definitions of the words in both Kanji and in Kana. My hubby bought me this book as part of my Valentine's gift last year. The stories are great and the book is an excellent language teaching tool.
