I have done the same thing. In college, I was studying Japanese, and my teacher was 日本人. One time, I met her in the hallway and she asked me in Japanese "お元気ですか？", and I replied "俺は元気です。" My teacher had a shocked look on her face, and I realized that I said something rude or stupid. I don't know <em>where</em> I learned 俺, but obviously I misunderstood. Very embarrassing. :-p I think many new language students make this kind of mistake. :D Ha ha ha! I have done the same thing.

I can understand what you say very well, because I made several embarrasing mistakes when I tried using 'casual' Engish words. In fact those words that I used were too casual and very dirty words. I learned them from TV drama for teenagers. On the Japanese subscript, they were not translated so much dirty. They were moderated, I guess. SO, I got a lesson by these mistakes. I should pick up words only from sensible programs. It's good to know informal terms and appreciate them, but I should not use them unless I could become to understand the cultural background.
