Hey Doug,
The quote comes from the Ryaku Fusatsu (precept renewal) liturgy we recite each month at my Zen center. I don't know how common it is at other Zen centers, but some variation of it seems to be used in the Mountains and Rivers Order (Daido Loori's people), as well, so it's possible that it's fairly widespread at least in centers run by dharma heirs of Taizan Maezumi Roshi.

Be well and gassho!

Hi guys, sorry for the late reply:

Stephen: ha ha ha, good trivia to konw. Yeah, on any given day, there's a lot to commemorate, or in India at least, there's at least one Hindu-related holiday somewhere. Or so I was told. :)

Jamie McLeod: Where'd you find that nice quotation?

Senshin: Mange tak! Happy Rohatsu til dig også. (Google translate, hope that made sense)

Happy Jodo-e!
Jim Morrison's birthday BTW
Probably greater remembered by many as John Lennon's memorial day.
Also US, Britain and Australia declared war on Japan in 1941, and in 1987 Presidents Gorbachev and Reagan signed the first ever treaty to reduce USSR and USA ground-based intermediate-range missiles.
A lot has happened on one and each day,
May we all find the way to peace,
Stephen
