Suica is east Japan only, but while in Kyoto recently an advertisement that said Suica and other cards in central and West Jspan would integrate more and be usable across regions. I’d love to use my Suica going from Kyoto to Nara for example.

I wanted to mention one thing about the Suica card. You have to pay 500 yen to get it, but if you don’t need it any more (like, if you are leaving Japan) you can get the 500 yen back (plus whatever amount remains on the card), although they keep 140 yen as a service charge. Not a bad deal, considering the convenience: if you keep it charged up, you don’t have to wait in line buying train tickets, and you can use it for many buses as well as some convenience stores and vending machines. (although I think it is usable only in the Tokyo area only, right?)
