Shingen had such strong confidence not only in his samurai vassal retainers but also in his ashigaru soldiers AND the peasants of Kai who apparently greatly support Shingen. With this support and Shingen's confidence, the Takeda did not feel it necessary to build great castles like the daimyo in other parts of Japan. Shingen himself did not even live in a castle like other daimyo. Good comparison of the French in Vietnam versus Takeda Shingen in Kai province.
