Wrap-up of Girls’ Day

Just wanted to post some quick photos from the Girls’ Day celebration recently at our house.

This is a Girls’ Day themed bento lunch my wife made for our daughter (she got the idea from a website):

This is the Emperor (left) and Bride (right). :)

Also, here’s dinner:

Chirashi Dinner

Chirashi is a traditional Girls’ Day dinner, though my wife added peppers as a garnish too. This Chirashi dish includes things like boiled shrimp, egg, rice, ikura, and salmon.

Also for Girls’ Day, we enjoyed a popular, traditional desert called sakuramochi (桜餅):

Girls' Day Sakuramochi

Sakuramochi is mochi (pounded rice, like taffy) with a sweet, pinkish color, wrapped in a leaf. The leaf is edible of course. Inside it is filled with red-bean paste (anko) which is sweet. The sakuramochi we ate was really good, and the filling almost tasted like strawberry jam to me. Sadly you can only get sakuramochi around Girls’ Day and I only could enjoy one. My daughter was crying recently because she wanted Sakuramochi again, and I explained to her that Girls’ Day is already done.

Also, in case anyone noticed, yes that is a Christmas plate we used. We ran out of normal plates that night. ;)

Anyway, sorry for the bad photos, but all in all Girls’ Day was a lot of fun.

Update: Earthquake in Japan (Yahoo, BBC, Al-Jazeera). We’re trying to get in touch with my wife’s family at the moment but the phone lines are down, or saturated. Praying that everything is ok. Namo Kanzeon Bosatsu

Update 2: Wife got in touch with her family this morning and all is well. A lot of people in Tokyo had to walk home from work but thankfully no injuries.
