Me and the Fonzie!
Posted: May 27, 2009 | Author: Doug | Filed under: General | 3 Comments »Funny story, but this weekend, while I was at a bookstore in Dublin with the family, I turned around, and there was Henry Winkler himself doing a book-signing! For those who don’t know, Henry Winkler was the actor behind the famous character the Fonzie.
Funny story. We were at the bookstore on Dawson Street, looking at children’s books, and I turned around and there he was at the counter. At first I couldn’t believe it, then I made a big deal of it to my wife, who’s never seen the show, let alone heard of Fonzie. Then, I acted like a total idiot and was too scared to go up and say hi, but she prodded me to go over so I did. I like to talk a lot, and usually am outgoing, but this was something different.
In any case, Henry Winkler was a really nice fellow, and totally humble. He was promoting his Hank Zipzer series of books in Ireland and presumably the UK, so autographed a copy of the #3 book for my daughter.
So this is my once chance to hang out with the Fonz.
Baby didn’t seem to care at all (edited out her face), but she got a book from the Fonz. How cool is that?

wow, this is neat! you met the Fonz! I would have done exactly the same thing – be amazed, panic and run, and be prodded into action by spouse!
I’m glad you got his book for your daughter, got it signed, and chatted with the Fonz. That is reallly really uber cool in my opinion.
The Fonz.. Wow. And isn’t he a director too on top of things? And now author? Cool.
That is so cool. So much time has gone by since the Happy Days show it is amazing.
Maggie B: Yeah, it’s not Seattle is littered with Hollywood celebs, especially iconic ones, so I just didn’t know what to do. It’s weird when you hear so much about a person, but then see them in real life. Amazing how things are different. Shows how much TV and ads distort things. In the case of Mr. Winkler though, he was a really, really nice guy.
Mike: Welcome to the JLR! Yeah, I was only very little when Happy Days was around, but I do remember watching it with my Dad on the couch. That’s among my earliest memories. Funny how almost 30 years later I meet the Fonz. Life is interesting.
