Poem by Yosa Buson

I saw this wonderful poem by famous Japanese poet, Yosa Buson, on my daughter’s TV show Nihongo de asobo, which is shown on NHK. The poem is titled haru no umi which translates to “Spring Ocean”:

春の海終日のたりのたり哉!

haru no umi hinemosu notari notari kana!

My translation, thanks in very large part to Denshi Jisho is:

Oh, how the spring ocean rolls along all day long!

Pretty timely since July 20th is 海の日 (Ocean Day) in Japan. Where we live in Blackrock, Ireland, there is a nice view of Dublin Bay, so who knows what we’ll do that day. Maybe I’ll upload some photos. :)
