Mos Burger coming to the US, hallelujah

Thanks to “Andrea” over at TokyoBounce for bringing this article to my attention. Mos Burger is a big chain of burger restaurants in Japan. The difference, compared to rivals is that they tend to provide a much nicer meal experience:

  • Many of their ingredients are organic.
  • They cook the food only after you order.
  • The focus is on quality, not quantity (contrast with fast-food restaurants in the US).

If you’ve been to a Mos Burger before, you may be surprised how small the burgers are though. Then again, experience has taught me that portions sizes in the US are too large, and once you taste those burgers you’ll see the difference. Personally, on the rare chance I get to eat there, I usually end up eating about 2 or 3 burgers, but I really like it. The milkshakes are good too.

People who live in Japan probably get tired of it after a while, but for me it’s a special treat I might enjoy about once every year or two years. So, the article above was a joy to hear. Lately, I’ve seen an explosion of Japanese stores in Seattle: Daiso stores are pretty easy to find now and my wife and I shop at them regularly. I also see other “Japanese goods” stores increasingly, but I haven’t seen a Mos Burger yet. I was told by my wife that one such store exists in Hawaii, but in mainland US, no.

So, chances are, if Mos Burger is setting up shop in the US, the first place will probably be California. But if they ever do setup shop here in Seattle, you can be sure I’ll be there on the first day to order my obligatory 3 burgers, fries and a coke. :)

Hallelujah, Mos Burger is coming to the US.

I hope you get your wish and find a MOS burger in your neighborhood whenever the craving for rice-bun burgers gets too strong!

  2. I am in Japan almost 50% of the time and eat at MOS Burger periodically. The MOS burger chain is always fresh and tasty. For vegetarians the gobo burger is really excellent and the salads are very fresh. If they come to the US, I doubt that they will have the Japanese menu items. As a vegetarian, I actually prefer the Freshness Burger chain. They have portabello mushroom burgers, bean burgers and tofu burgers. The Portabello are seasonal but worth the wait. If you have not tried them it is worth looking them up.

    Hi guys,

Andrea: Yeah, I hope so too. ;) Thanks!

Eijun: Welcome to the JLR! I know your name from your website which I like a lot. I wasn’t aware of the vegetarian options, but that’s a relief to hear, nor did I know about the Freshness Burger chain. I’ll have to check that out next time I got there (probably this summer).

It seems the menus have improved the last few years then. When I was in Japan last time I never went to any burger chain as I couldn’t find any good vegetarian alternatives.

    Doug,
I am a Big Fan of yours. I enjoy the Japanese tidbits (so true), your information on Japan and even the philosophic discussions. I would enjoy chatting with you some time and letting you know about the things that we are doing. Please contact me at my email anytime.

One of our projects last year was to subtitle the Japanese Movie Kukai with English. This blockbuster movie 1985 is quite amazing. If you send me an address I will send you a copy when I return to Fresno (March 26, 2011).

I have followed most of your blog evolutions and enjoyed them through the years.

    With Respect,

    Eijun

That’s awesome that Mos Burger is coming to the states. I’m sure they’ll put one in Seattle and definitely Portland. Maybe the Golden Arches will learn a lesson or two.

To be honest, I haven’t been to a Mos Burger for awhile. This blog post made me hungry, I might just …

    Hi Eijun, I sent you a follow-up email. :)

Well, Seattle’s not a big city, though it’s the only major one in the Northwest, so I hope you’re right. :)
